Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She has worked as a media critic since 1995. Feminist Frequency is a website with video and an online blog looking at the portrayals of female characters in popular media and popular. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit website that focuses on female representations in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. She's committed to removing stereotypes about women and how they are depicted in pop culture. Furthermore she has a mission to increase awareness of online harassment directed at women, and other marginalized groups of people. A graduate in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaker and she has delivered speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights in the early stages. She was a young woman who wanted to create an online series which would explore gender representations in games. In the end, she ended up being the target of cyber-bullying. The woman was not stopped from the attack, and in fact it only reinforced her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. Many awards have been presented to her in recognition of her contributions to the field she contributed to. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her work as a critic of media and also founded Feminist Frequency. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit organization that explores the portrayals of women in pop culture today.
